The Challenge and Witness of Frederic Ozanam

by | Apr 13, 2018 | Formation, Society of St. Vincent de Paul

This 15-minute video tells the story of the founding of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul by Frederic Ozanam. It was produced by the Society in Victoria, Australia. April 23 is both Frederic Ozanam’s birthday and the anniversary of the foundation of the Society, so our spotlight will be on the SSVP over the next couple of weeks.

Reflection

Fr. John Freund, C.M. offers the following reflection:

This video puts Frederic squarely in the life and times of a country facing massive social change. In doing so it presents a side of Frederic that is perhaps too little appreciated. There is much food for thought for the Vincentian Family as it comes to grips with working toward a hand up to those on the margins of society.

Questions to think about…

  • What similarities struck you between the issues Frederic was concerned about in his day and the issues we face today?
  • Was there anything that surprised you about Frederic’s response to the conditions of his times?
  • Who are the contemporary young Frederics in our midst?
