Going Beyond Rigged Cycles

by | Oct 26, 2016 | Formation, Reflections, Systemic change

Pictures truly are worth 1000 words. VinFormation offers this 67 second video insight into the concept of systemic change as breaking the cycles of poverty.

Systemic Change is about transforming structures (the wheel into the ladder), collaboration (the others rushing in to assist), and the involvement of the poor themselves in their own solution (the man climbs out of poverty himself, with the helpers holding the ladder in a supportive role).

Notice how it involves everyone!

Try this 67 second test…

Do I recognize the structures people are trapped in?

What needs to be done to transform treadmills into ladders?

What is my default approach?

  • Walk on by?
  • Leave people to fend for themselves?
  • Offer first aid? A handout?
  • Walk with the person? Offer a hand up?
