On Jan. 2, 2018, DePaul University, the nation’s largest Catholic university, will launch its master’s of education in Value-Creating Education for Global Citizenship, offering a comprehensive examination of the educational philosophies and practices of Soka educators Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda and Daisaku Ikeda.
The first degree program of its kind in the world, it engages students in understanding and applying value-creating education for global citizenship in theory, research, policy and practice in local and global contexts.
Program Director Jason Goulah said the title of the new master’s program, Value-Creating Education for Global Citizenship, was inspired by SGI President Ikeda’s 1996 lecture at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he put forth the notion of fostering global citizens who could contribute to solving the world’s pressing and intractable problems.
“The purpose of education is to foster global citizens who can create value for oneself and others,” Dr. Goulah said. “A master’s program that can teach educators how to foster this capacity in students is what the world requires.”
DePaul University, founded in 1898, is located in Chicago. In 2014, its College of Education opened the Institute for Daisaku Ikeda Studies in Education. In December 2015, DePaul University issued Daisaku Ikeda an honorary doctorate of humane letters for his efforts in education and peace building.
