In an effort to “force the conversation” on poverty and hunger in the upcoming elections, Dave Barringer of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul introduced us to Brian Corbin of Catholic Charities USA (and 25 year+ member of the Society). Brian was the guest of the Vincentian Family Leaders who met after the Vincentian Family Gathering in Denver (USA) and he put us in touch with an effort being mounted by an ecumenical group collaborating for systemic change in the political arena. Called the “Circle of Protection” (http://circleofprotection.us/), their efforts echo the scripture, “Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8-9). Their mission and strategy?
As national leaders from all the major branches of Christianity, we care deeply about many issues facing our country, but ending hunger and poverty is a top priority of our work together. We are praying for a president who will make ending hunger and poverty a top priority of his or her administration. Are you that leader?â
Over 100 Christian leaders have joined together to ask this question of 2016 candidates for President. Our request to the candidates: âPlease produce a three minute video telling the American people what you would do as president to offer help and opportunity to hungry and poor people in the United States and around the world.â
Responses to this request will be posted on this site and broadly distributed among the members and constituents of our churches, schools, and organizations.
Take a look and join in their efforts! “For he who is not against us is for us.” (Mark 9:40)
