The long awaited papal encyclical on the interaction of humans and their environment was released today. It’s prompting reflection and commentary everywhere.
“This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will.”
“Laudato Si” takes its inspiration from St. Francis and clearly situates concern for the environment as within the body of Catholic Social Teaching. Addressed to the whole world, and not just Roman Catholics, Pope Francis “shares the microphone” with Patriarch Bartholomew as well. You can download and read the encyclical here.
