The Rosalie Projects: When all you have are chickens

In 2019, in Benin City, Nigeria, the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul created the “Lindalva Inclusive School” to offer children with and without disabilities a good education.

With the help of the Rosalie Project, pupils are provided with a meal twice a day, so that they no longer go to school hungry.
(“Pour ne pas vivre seul” project). Then the “Petits corps malades” project equipped the school with computers and distributed school supplies to poor children.
The “Quand on n’a que des poules” project aimed to set up a poultry farm to generate income and perpetuate the actions of this inclusive school.

A poultry farm that brings together and enthuses parents, children and villagers!

The project began with visits to local poultry farms to benefit from their experience and skills. Parents and volunteers also contributed their knowledge. With the funds raised, the school purchased all the materials needed to equip and run the hen houses: hens, cages, water and feed containers, egg crates, electricity…

For the sake of hygiene, the hens have been vaccinated by the vet.
The workers and sisters, trained to work in poultry farming, carry out their tasks carefully and enthusiastically.

Pupils, parents and teachers have all experienced the installation of the chicken coops with great excitement and joy,
including the local population!” Sr Ali Martha

A poultry farm that is growing and having a positive impact on the lives of many, many people!

Despite the difficulties encountered (excessive heat and the death of 40 hens, inflation and the sharp devaluation of the Nigerian currency), the results in 4 months are very encouraging:

– the hens laid 960 crates of eggs, for a total of 28,800 eggs

– 16 crates were damaged
– 904 crates, or 27,120 eggs, were sold to the poor at an affordable price.
200 pupils benefited from the consumption of eggs, i.e. 40 crates of eggs, which greatly improved their diet and health.

100 adults have benefited from the purchase and resale of eggs, particularly widows and young boys and girls who have no jobs in the region.

8 young people and vulnerable adults are gainfully employed on the poultry farm; in particular, a mentally handicapped woman is off the streets, no longer begging in markets and along roadsides: she is now respectfully integrated into her family and community.

“We are grateful to all our donors and we ask our God to bless them and grant them what they need.
and grant them what they desire.” Sr Ali Martha

With them, thanks to you!
