St. Vincent de Paul with Children

Artist: Sister Agnes Berchmans, SC, nee Julia Alma Landry, who became a prolific painter of religious subjects. She was born in 1879 at Bouctouche, New Brunswick, Canada. She entered the Sisters of Charity in 1896 while a teenager. Her order, recognizing her talents, sent her to Florence, Italy to study with Filadelfo Simi. She completed 135 religious paintings for the Motherhouse Chapel at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. The Chapel was subsequently destroyed by fire. She painted until she was ninety-three years old, when poor eyesight forced her to give up her work. Her remaining work is said to number approximately 350 canvases. Thank God for Sister Agnes Berchmans, her great talent and her generous sharing of it for others.
Thanks also, to her congregation for recognizing her gift and giving her the means to develop and share these many years.
