Savor the Love that God Has for Us

Jesus shows the depth of God’s love to the end.  To savor such love is to know the One who creates us and is with us and makes us breathe.

Those who cherish the law, the Torah, savor it, for they find it to be sweeter than honey.  So, Jesus who fulfills the law and the prophets, teaches with delight, no doubt, that the Lord God is one.  And, of course, he tells the Eleven to go and make disciples of all nations.  To baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  They will teach also, so that others may savor maybe all he commands.

But Jesus does not expressly say or explain to his disciples that there are three persons in one God.  Nor do they seem to ask for explanation.  It seems that it is enough for them to experience the grace of the Lord Jesus.  To experience, too, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit.

And maybe such an experience is what we need most today.  We thank, of course, those who study and teach the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity so that we understand.  For they help us to grow in faith.

But speculation comes with risks and may tear us apart more than make us one.   It may swell us with pride and make us think we have God all figured out.  Yet we are to be lowly and admit that he is always greater than what our religion teaches about him.  That he is not an idol that our imagination, worries and wishes fabricate.

Rather, he is love, most of all.  The love that creates us out of nothing and gives worth to us who are nothing before it.  The love also that is with us and walks with us, pilgrims, to the end.  And the love that is the breath that gives us life and spurs us on from within us.

Lord Jesus, be the one to teach us.  For, like the Pharisee Nicodemus, we cannot break out of the mold, that of our religion, of our devotion to the law that mostly judges and punishes.  To learn from you is to savor God who is love:  as Father, God for us; as  you, Emmanuel, God with, alongside, us; as the Holy Spirit, God within us.  Then, with simple and living faith, and not with just a mind that cuts up and analyze things, we shall put our trust in you (SV.EN XI:190).  You have the words of eternal life besides; be for us the food that satisfies all longings and suites all tastes.
