Director – USA, Office of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation

The Daughters of Charity (DC) are members of an international congregation of women founded by Saints Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac in 1633. Our mission is to be “Given to God, in community, for the service of persons living in poverty.” We are called in our Constitutions 18b, “to seek and love the truth and to defend it in situations of injustice.” We commit ourselves to work collaboratively for social transformation to change the unjust structures that exploit and exclude people. We are alert to ways of helping our brothers and sisters to become conscious of their own dignity and agents of their own promotion. We openly affirm respect for and the defense of human life in all its stages, and the right to peace for all peoples and nations.

Position Summary: The Director – USA, Office of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation promotes education, advocacy and action for the Sisters, staff and Vincentian Family collaborators across the United States, with respect to current issues of justice, peace and integrity of creation. This is done in coordination with the two DC Provincial Council liaisons. This person will work remotely.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages, motivates and supports the Advocacy and Social Justice Committee (ASJC) and its 6 sub-committees (Care of Earth, Homelessness and Insecure Housing, Human Trafficking, Hunger, Immigration Advocacy, and Racism). Each subcommittee has a Corporate Stance to guide their work and they meet monthly or bi-monthly, often in the evening.
  • Researches, designs and distributes via MailChimp a regular Justice communication.
  • Offers presentations and resources as requested.
  • Represents the Daughters of Charity on identified international, national and regional justice groups including the United Nations NGO (non-Governmental organizations) Offices of DC International and Sisters of Charity Federation, Vincentian Family Justice Reps, among others.
  • Updates the Social Justice content and the Social Justice Library on the public page websites.
  • Develops and implements an annual Organizing Plan based on the DC Directional Statement, DC Assembly documents, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years relevant justice ministry experience
  • Strong commitment to and demonstrated passion for justice
  • Knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching
  • Willingness to learn or understands the Vincentian charism
  • Ability to:
    • Analyze and effectively articulate the justice agenda
    • Motivate others on behalf of justice issues and concerns
    • Engage others in active dialogue and reflective thinking
    • Present effectively to diverse populations
    • Comfortable using communication technology
