Do You Pray For Systemic Change?

by | Apr 11, 2018 | Systemic change

When things are important to us we pray. Perhaps we should ask when was the last time we prayed for the success of systemic changes?

If systemic changes are needed to make it possible to climb out of poverty, shouldn’t we be praying for these systemic changes?

A question for the Vincentian Family today… Do we pray for the systemic change required that all may have food, clothing, shelter and live in a world that recognizes in its structures that we are brothers and sisters?

If not, take a few moments to ask why not?

Perhaps the following prayer will help us to pray for systemic change.

Prayer for Vincentians About to Engage in a Process for Systemic Change

May God be with us as we serve those in need.

May we find creative ways to assist them in becoming independent.

May we pray for unity amongst Vincentians throughout the world.

May we explore new ways to teach and learn from those we serve.

May we pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us on the Vincentian Pathway to ending poverty as we now know it.

May we find courage and stamina to improve the structural systems that keep our friends in need in their place at the bottom of the ladder.

May we stand with them and for them in their struggles for justice in the care provided for and to them.

May God bless all of us knowing we are all doing our part to improve the system of care for those in need.

We might also remember how often we are asked to pray:

  • Mark 13:33
Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.
  • Luke 18:1
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
  • Acts 1:14
They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
  • Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
  • Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
  • Colossians 1:3
We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,
  • Colossians 1:4
because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people–
  • Colossians 4:2
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:17
    pray continually,
  • 1 Timothy 2:1
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people–
  • Jude 1:20
But you, dear friends, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit
