Meet them. Six young people from DePaul University. They’re on a mission like yours.
Shemar Jones is a senior majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and a minor in Spanish. He’s a DePaul Leadership Scholar, a STARS peer mentor, and an office assistant in the Student Affairs office.
In both of his student positions, Shemar is able to be an advocate and support system for students. As a student mentor, he is able to combat the stereotypes and systemic barriers that keep students of color, low-income, first-generation students from being successful by mentoring them and guiding them to the resources they need. As an office assistant, he listens to the questions and concerns of students and guides them in times of difficult situations and circumstances where they can feel valued and understood.
She’s a junior majoring in African and Black Diaspora Studies and Peace, Justice & Conflict Studies with a minor in Education. Michaela is a member of the Senior Team, a DCSA coordinator, a Community Peacemaker, and the secretary for S.T.R.O.N.G.
Michaela Clarke‘s favorite member of the Vincentian Family is Rosalie Rendu. Michaela respects the bravery and courage Rosalie had to put her life in danger to tend those in need, regardless of their position in the war. Those are values she strives to live by through her service as well.
She’s a sophomore majoring in Journalism with a concentration in Latino Media & Communications. Kelly Garcia is an RA in Clifton-Fullerton Hall, student assistant for Meet Me at the Mission & Vice-President of Tepeyac.
Her favorite tenet of Vincentian Leadership is Vincentian Personalism because of the ability to integrate our own uniqueness into our service for others. She embraces her Latinidad and works hard to shine the light on those in her community whose stories typically go unheard of.
He’s a senior majoring in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy and Global Asian Studies. He currently serves as the Global Asian ambassador, a student alumni ambassador and the treasurer for DePaul’s Student Government Association. Go Ben Bui!
She’s a senior majoring in International Studies and Spanish with a minor in Latin American and Latino studies. She’s originally from Ecuador and moved to Chicago 7 years ago. Natalia is a McNair Scholar and a research assistant at the Stean Center.
Through the research she’s done in her undergraduate career and as a McNair Scholar, Natalia Lopez has developed a focus and interest in Latin American resistance movements, transnational migration and human rights policies in developing economies. She’s working on being better equipped with the critical skills and training necessary to create a positive impact in marginalized populations in Latin America.
Maciej is a sophomore majoring in Mathematics & History. He’s the Vice-President for Honors Student Government, student assistant in the Honors office & is a participant in Bible study and Qur’an study.
