Lord, Have Mercy • Tales of the Miraculous Virgin

by | Nov 23, 2016 | Association of the Miraculous Medal, Formation, Reflections

In a few days, the Vincentian Family will greet the Virgin with special affection in its invocation of “Miraculous.” Surely this month many reflections will be published online, on her history, present, etc.

We invited you to do something different: to tell tales, your story or that of your family, with the Miraculous Virgin. No reflections, but experiences. We are confident that there are many gestures of love and trust in the Virgin within our Vincentian Family. And sharing is another way of making family.

Sr. Linda Góimez, DC, quickly answered. Here you have her story. After it, you have a form where you can write your own, to be published throughout the days preceding the feast of our mother, on November 27. You can do it in Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, Italian… no matter the language, we will try to translate it into the languages used in famvin.

Dare to participate! Sure many others want to know of “your” story, to learn to love more and to better follow the example of Mother Mary.

This incident happened many years ago, but its impact is fresh on me.

One evening our friend, Dr. Remy, a frenchman, asked us to help him trace a french tourist who has had an accident at the beach while swimming. He said he was at that moment admitted in the government hospital.

My superior and I went with him and found the man in a very bad condition; he had fractured his cervical spine after hitting an underwater dune. He had much difficulty in breathing. Since he had nobody with him, we offered to stay with him that night at the hospital to attend to his needs. He knew only French, so communication with him was rather difficult. With my little broken French, somehow I was able to have a kind of conversation with him.

At the mention of prayer he laughed sarcastically saying he didn’t believe in God. He even mockingly asked me if it works. I told him for me it does, and told him according to my faith I’ll pray for him. He nodded helplessly as if saying, “well…”. I put the Miraculous Medal under his pillow and we kept on Praying while attending to whatever need he had. His conditioned deteriorated and I started to pray audibly for him to hear: “O Mary conceived without sin..” in French. A while later I heard him say: “Mon Dieu, pitie moi!” he kept on repeating it and died without much struggle…

In the midst of the pain, I could not help admiring and feeling my heart full of gratitude to the Blessed Mother, who made this miraculous conversion.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Sr. Linda Gómez, DC
