The Olympics should be a joyful event. But when jealousy, racism, bullying and meanness get together, it’s a bad mix.

Her hair, her patriotism — all objects of criticism. Instead of celebrating with this wonderful young woman, parts of the world — especially the social media world — entertained their darker angels. This great young woman’s name is Gabrielle Douglas.

Being a Vincentian means living a life that celebrates the triumphs of others, but that’s not what was happening.

In 2012 Twitter went into overdrive after Douglas became the first African-American gymnast to win the Olympic all-around title. But rather than lauding her excellence, critics rounded on her for the state of her hair during the final.

Four years on and Douglas has another Olympic gold, from the women’s team competition, but the sheen from that victory has also been tarnished after TV cameras showed her standing to attention during the national anthem.

It may sound like a small thing to do, but give her a shout out @gabrielledoug. And celebrate the triumphs of your friends and colleagues. Be careful what you put on social media. Jealousy, meanness or racism have no place in the Family that says #IamVincent.

Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do. (1 Thess. 5:11)
