On December 11, 195 nations reached an agreement in Paris which could save the planet—The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This Agreement, however, will not take effect unless a sufficient number of member states officially sign onto it between April 22, 2016, and April 21, 2017. April 22, 2016, marks the day a high level signature ceremony will take place at the UN in New York.

You can hold your head of state accountable for the fate of our future world by writing to insist they sign the Agreement. The sample letter below can be used for that purpose. After dating the letter and indicating your address above, it requires that you insert the name of your country, and mention a few of the climate change effects it is experiencing.

The Climate Change Agreement (sometimes called the Paris Summit Agreement) challenges nations to curb greenhouse gas emissions and prevent temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) by 2100, with an ideal goal of limiting the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pope Francis has called for a world-wide commitment to implement the Agreement and to pay particular attention to poorer populations.

The Agreement will only become effective if 55 countries that produce at least 55% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions approve it. Forwarding the attached letter to your head of state is one means of ensuring a sufficient number of nations sign on. Act now!
