Lebanon – The Tragic Consequences of the Bombings

“My people, right now, are living under the bombs of hatred.” So says Sister Mirna, a Lebanese, who explains the critical situation facing the Sisters of Charity of St. Jean Antide Thouret in Lebanon, who, despite Israeli bombardment, fear and widespread devastation, have decided to stay with the people and protect their homes and schools, while facing a growing humanitarian crisis:

I share with you some news from our Sisters of Charity of St. Jeanne Antide Thouret in Lebanon and ask for your prayers: the security situation near the provincial house and our school in Baabda is becoming more precarious every day.

Yesterday – September 30 – during the night Israel massively bombed the Laylaki neighbourhood and the Kamil Chamoun course. So the risk is becoming serious. It is obvious that our nuns are going through moments of great tribulation and fear, but they are taking courage and have chosen not to leave out of solidarity with the people resisting and to protect the nuns’ homes and the school.

In the south, the situation is hellish, the inhabitants receive threatening messages on their mobile phones from Israel with the injunction to leave immediately before the land incursion. People do not know where to find refuge, the failing state has not prepared places of shelter, the associations are incapable of responding to the needs of the displaced. Thousands of people sleep in their cars, others are left in public gardens.

Hygienic conditions are almost non-existent: this will lead to a health crisis in the near future. Sadly, entire families perished under the bombardment, caught together because they were hit by a missile at home or in the car. Desolation, consternation, devastation, extermination, disaster… that is the picture!

The tunnel of violence seems long, without light! We hope that the humanitarian conscience of the international community will awaken from its torpor.

We intensify our prayers. The world needs the Breath of God, an ecology of fraternity!
