“Summer weather means an abundance of fresh vegetables……”

It was a productive day for the Ladies of Charity volunteers (of Calvert County, Maryland), bolstered by the addition of two new, energetic members from DeMatha High School. The sweltering weather made the tents essential, providing much-needed shade from the relentless sun and heat. Many volunteers found themselves hoping for the new building’s completion by next summer to provide better shelter and facilities.

The pantry clients were provided with nutritious food and then offered free health screenings by the Calvert County Health Department Mobile Unit. The providers assessed 23 clients, offering valuable services such as blood pressure checks. The health department hopes to make this a monthly event and will return to the pantry on July 2 at 11:45 AM.

Summer weather means an abundance of fresh produce courtesy of God’s Bounty, a non-profit farm… The farm donated two full boxes of yellow and zucchini squash. The farm supports local food pantries with 100% of its proceeds. Our dedicated volunteer Delores ensures that our clients receive the freshest produce by harvesting from the farm every Tuesday morning in the summer months.

When the day concluded and the OPEN banner was taken down, the food distribution efforts had served 2871 pounds of food to 215 individuals across 81 households, and three new families were registered. It was a day marked by community support, health services, and fresh produce for those in need.
