International Peace Day

In observance of International Peace Day, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth gathered for a special prayer at St. Vincent de Paul Church as well as around the Peace Pole on the Motherhouse Campus grounds. The afternoon prayer called for Sister to contemplate: “How am I embracing peace in the midst of my interactions?” and “How do I let go of my grievances in a peaceful manner?”

In the church, a new, mobile Peace Pole was blessed. Like the permanent one on the grounds, which was installed in 2006, the new Peace Pole is inscribed with the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” written in multiple languages as well as in braille. These languages include English, Nepali, Hindi, Spanish, Creole, Swahili, Setswana and Cherokee. It was also made with a material that will withstand the constant changes in weather.

The newest Peace Pole was obtained as part of The Peace Pole Project. With its purchase, 10 new trees were planted in Africa in honor of the Sisters.

The prayer was a poignant moment of reflection and unity as Sisters and staff came together to offer prayers for peace, justice, and an end to violence and conflict. The service ended with the singing of “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”
