The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) in Italy participated in the press conference held on June 1 at the Chamber of Deputies to say NO to nuclear weapons and together with other Catholic associations.signed the petition.

On the occasion of Republic Day, 32 Catholic associations and organizations called on the Italian government to ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and to embark on a diplomatic path to promote an end to the war in Ukraine.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, TPNW, is the first legally binding international treaty for the total prohibition of nuclear weapons, making them unlawful and moving toward their complete elimination. It became effective on January 22, 2021 and, as of today, has 84 signatories , but Italy has yet to join, as have Japan, the United States and Russia.

Giuliano Crepaldi, President of the SSVP Central Council of Rome, delegated by the President of the Italian National Federation of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, Paola Da Ros stated: “Joining would be an important step towards peace, but even more a strong signal to avoid the use of nuclear weapons at such a difficult moment in the history of humanity”.
