William (Bill) Graham from Peel-North Toronto Ontario Regional Council, Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers his reflection, It’s About Love:

As Vincentians we can, and in most cases, do great things, help so many people and sometimes change lives. We are so fortunate to have the privilege of having the opportunity to do this. We should be so thankful.

The Lord gives us his love in an abundant measure. No matter whether we are good or bad, rich or poor, black or white, undeserving or deserving we receive His full love. In return we are expected to pass this love on to others with whom we interact.  We are told that “the Lord loves us as much as the person we love the least.” So, based on that we have to love everyone, forgive them as necessary and ask their forgiveness. It doesn’t mean we have to interact with them or agree with their views or values but we must love them. We are told that “Love Conquers All,” and I believe this is so true.

How do we do this?  For Vincentians, the Lord provides constant daily opportunities to do this as we serve our neighbors in need. The opportunities are there for us and all we have to do is make the most of them by serving them with Love, Respect, Justice and Joy. We ask ourselves what else do they need? What can we do. We should not be restricted by boundaries or prejudices. Wherever the person is or whomever they are, if they are in need we have a Christian and human obligation to show them our love by serving them in the best way we can. If you are giving the last of your food, vouchers, Bus tickets etc., have faith that the Lord will provide more when you need them. Many Vincentians believe and follow this and are often surprised when they find the Lord has filled up the empty cup once again.

We can expand on this with “Acts of Kindness.”  We have continuous opportunities to do this. Maybe its holding the door for the person, saying hello to the person on the street, taking that street person in to the Tim’s for a cup of coffee, sitting with them and talking to them. Your greatest gift and the one they will appreciate most is your time and sincerity. You are doing this with love for your fellow man and it will show.

The winter has greater needs. Having a bag in your car with a pair of socks, a Tim card and possibly a scarf and hat to give out is worthwhile. Whatever it costs you, I guarantee you will never miss it. The Lord, in His ways, always repays us in full.

Doing all of these things also helps the person realize that someone cares about them, even a total stranger loves them. Hopefully this love you return to the Lord through them might help them to love themselves and be encouraged to seek help or help themselves.

It is all about Love!
