Junior Ladies of Charity: Keeping Busy!

by | Dec 30, 2023 | International Association of Charities - Ladies of Charity, News

St. Mary’s Junior Ladies of Charity have been keeping busy with a variety of projects throughout this summer and fall. They held a very successful bake sale in July, with proceeds going to fund their projects for this school year. If you were on Broadway in August, you may have seen several of the girls working with Janice Ferguson on backpacks for delivery to children in need. Two of our girls helped with face painting and tattoos at Response to Love Center’s Heath Fair.

With the beginning of the new school year the JLOC held their annual Ice Cream Social to welcome new members. So far five new girls have signed on to join our ranks and we have high hopes of attracting more soon. Some of our new girls are joining us from St. Philips, from our Family of Churches. Also in September the JLOC held their first household collection since the Covid pandemic, with the truck load of donations being delivered on Broadway on September 25th. The latest project was a parish-wide Halloween Costume Collection in which over 40 costumes were donated. At the October meeting the girls prepared the costumes for delivery to Gerard Place and Hope House. Candy treat bags were assembled and will accompany the costumes. Several other treat bags were assembled for their friends at Symphony Manor, and new pen pals at Buffalo Public School #6. They also wrote their first pen pal letters of the year to accompany the treat bags. The girls also assembled a Halloween raffle basket for the Style Show. Our president and vice president were models at this year’s Style Show as well. They also just spent a morning at the Alden United Methodist Church assembling dry food packages for the Rise Against Project. The food packages will go to Third World countries in the fight against hunger.

Future plans include Thanksgiving favors and Christmas cookies and gifts for Symphony Manor and Buffalo PS #6 pen pals. They also plan to sponsor two needy families over Christmas, providing gifts and treats.
