On December 2, at the Casa Immacolata of the Daughters of Charity in Rome, there was a Conference on the Enlightenment: “Four Hundred Years after the Enlightenment Experience of St. Louise de Marillac 1623-2023.” This event was organized by the National Coordinating Committee of the Vincentian Family of Italy.
In 1623, Louise was plunged into a darkness that led her to doubt that her existence had any meaning. She felt overwhelmed by the chaos of universal Nothingness. But, in her interior prayer drama, the illumination of the Spirit of God healed her and united the cracks in her soul. By the grace of the Spirit, a new Louise was born … a woman who would live her whole life remembering that moment, receiving, assimilating and incorporating that Spirit that introduced her to the adventure of charity.
