The Council General International of the SSVP sends first emergency relief aid
On Saturday, August 14 an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale devastated Haiti. The death toll is now close to 1,000 and more than 6,000 people have been injured. In addition, tropical storm Grace is approaching, which will complicate the situation of thousands of victims and the rescue work that is currently being carried out.
The SSVP is present in the country and the Haitian Vincentians, together with the Daughters of Charity and the entire Vincentian Family, have been supporting their neighbours from the outset with aid for basic needs. The International General Council has joined the work of the local Vincentians and, through the International Commission for Aid and Development (CIAD), has provided an initial amount of 10,000 euros to support the local Conferences in their work.
As soon as the Council General International receives more information from the National Council of the SSVP in Haiti, it will consider the best way to send new aid to the country.

The 16th President General, Renato Lima, stated “We are all concerned about the situation in Haiti, because, apart from the earthquake, the country is experiencing a political and economic crisis that has been aggravated by the pandemic, which has increased unemployment and poverty. Now, more than ever, humanitarian aid from the SSVP and the Vincentian Family is essential. I hope that many donations will be forthcoming. I ask you all, in every Vincentian Conference, to pray a Hail Mary this week for Haiti”.
