Firewood for the Soul: Greater
MOVING HILLS IS A STEPPING STONE TO MOVING MOUNTAINS.
MATSHONA DHLIWAYO
Have you managed to do any miracles such as raising someone from the dead or managed to command any mountains to get up and move from one place to another? As far as we know all the mountain ranges in Queensland are still present and still in place. Sometimes we wonder what exactly Jesus meant when He said, “whoever believes in me will also do works that I do and greater works than these will they do”. Greater works than these? What on earth does this mean? What could be greater than raising someone from the dead or being able to move mountains and perform miracles?
The answer can be found in the scriptures in an early chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. Peter preaches to a crowd and three thousand people hear the message and are converted to following. Now is that as spectacular as raising someone from the dead? Probably not, but from those 3000 people hearing the apostle’s message, 2000 years later we have what we call the Church today. Sure, raising someone from the dead physically is amazing but being part of even one person being raised from the dead spiritually is incredible.
The St Vincent de Paul Society is part of this story. Frederic Ozanam said to his friends come and follow and so they did. This grew and all these years later the Society is present all over the world living out the Gospel message. We live out the Gospel to those we serve. They share with a few and then they share it with a few more people. Who knows perhaps through the good works we do, we may even change the world, move mountains or how about change cultures and the direction of our society?
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- How did you come to be part of the St Vincent de Paul Society – or some other institution of the Vincentian Family?
- Do you feel like you are making a difference in the lives of those you serve?
