Vincentian Family of Canada and the U.S. Social Justice Representatives

by | Jul 19, 2018 | Formation, Reflections

The social justice representatives of the Vincentian Family of Canada and the United States is a collaborative effort by 10 member organizations. Our meetings include discussions on various social justice issues common to both Canada and the United States as well as developing strategy statements which are then conveyed to our organizations/congregations with an emphasis on informing, educating and animating possible actions. These actions are intended to express our Vincentian perspective as it relates to creating systemic change and advocating for those without a voice who deserve to be heard.

Our efforts have resulted in developing statements on Climate Change, Immigration and support of our Muslim Brothers and Sisters. We endeavour to live out and share our Vincentian charism within the context of Catholic social teaching principles which are an integral part of the Church today.

There are many social structures in today’s world which act as barriers rather than bridges in keeping North Americans in both Canada and the United States living in a state of poverty with little or no hope of breaking out of the cycle of poverty. We live in a time with an urgent need to work toward systemic change; helping to shape how our governments, institutions and our own organizations/congregations address these complex issues. Racism, immigration, refugee settlement, indigenous peoples, unfair criminal justice systems and climate change are just some of the major issues that require unequivocal and untiring advocacy and dialogue in the public forum.

We understand that poverty has many faces, challenges and needs. In order to produce meaningful and positive results, we must ensure our focus is always on the dignity of every human being, regardless of race, creed or religion. We shall attempt to provide information and support as well as challenges in our future articles on this website. We welcome your comments on our efforts and any topics you would like to hear more about.

Regular participants in our monthly video conferences include:

Editors note:  This is a group of Vincentian Family members who meet regularly at the request of the leaders of their respective branches. Their reflections do not represent Vincentian Family policy, but are shared to spur our reflection and action. Look for these contributions the third Thursday of each month. Comments are very much appreciated.
