Social justice issues the Daughters are thinking about
From the Daughters of Charity Social Justice Link submitted by Sister Mary Ann
Dear Sisters,
As we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. today, may we commit ourselves anew to all efforts in our local communities that address racism in all its forms. In upcoming issues of the Social Justice Link we will be sharing programs and readings that may help us.

- Starting January 26th PBS is doing a 3-part series called “A Path Appears.” It is about human trafficking in the United States and is done by the team (Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn) who did “Half the Sky”. It uncovers the harshest forms of gender-based oppression and human rights violations, and the solutions being implemented to combat them. Advertised times are 10:00 pm (EST)/9:00 pm (CST), but check local listings to be sure.

- As we mark the 41th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs Wade, the USCCB encourages us to make a nine day novena for Life. While the attached flyer indicates the dates of January 17 – 26, it is never too late to begin nine days of prayer for life! Click on the link at the bottom of the attachment for material.

- Oil and gas industry proponents like to talk about how fracking will decrease our reliance on foreign energy sources (and thus solve all of our problems). The reality? Fracking companies want to export fracked gas to boost profits abroad — at the expense of our health here at home. The House and Senate are each considering their own version of these bills. They’re both aimed at forcing the Department of Energy (DOE), the agency responsible for approving permits for these facilities, to rush its decision-making process and expedite their approval. And right now, we’re trying to stop two bills that would make it easier for companies to do that. Send Congress a message to make sure they know where you stand: No Fracked Gas Exports.
