October 1, 2009 – More than two hundred volunteers composed of students, personnel and administrators of Adamson University (AdU) head to Northville 4-B in Marilao, Bulacan to carry-on “Bigay Lakas”, the empowering relief operation of AdU. This specific community which is a relocation site of former informal settlers from the PNR compound in Tondo, Manila is one of the hardest hit by Typhoon Ondoy. Armed with no more than spades and wheelbarrows, the males in the group initiated the clean-up of the alleyways littered with typhoon debris; the females did the distribution of relief goods. Through the Integrated Community Extension Services (ICES) , the local government unit and a private construction firm collaborated by sending bulldozers to hasten the clean-up as well as drums of clean water for the residents who neither have electricity nor water supply for five days now. Aside from the clean-up and distribution of goods for the entire week, a reinforced medical mission is also in order to prevent an epidemic. Adamson University is taking the lead to help alleviate the plight of our least fortunate brothers and sisters especially when a threat of another super typhoon to hit the Philippines this weekend is brewing.
