An 8.0 earthquake hit Perú at 18:40:58 local time (23:40:58 UTC) on 15 August 2007. The city of Pisco is believed to have been 80% destroyed, including the Church of San Clemente (C.M.), where 127 people were killed when the building collapsed. Several hundred were attending a funeral Mass. Fifteen members of the deceased’s immediate family died.

Two Daughters of Charity, former Visitatrix Sister Antonieta Perla and the sister who was her secretary, died in the church. Three sisters also in the church at the time of the earthquake survived, as did the priests. Deaths attributed to the quake now number 510.

famvin.org’s first report:

The CMGLOBAL website offer the following report:

Gerardo, our permanent contact in the Center for Vincentian Animation writes:The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea off Pisco; it was felt very strongly as far as Lima. It is said that 70% of the town of Pisco has been destroyed. The Church of San Clemente (C.M.) collapsed during the Mass with 300 persons participating. The confreres are safe. Father Emilio has some bruises on his arm, but two Daughters of Charity, Sister Antonieta and Sister Elizabeth, are buried in the rubble and we are hoping for a miracle that they will be found alive as other persons who made it out. In Ica, all the confreres are well and safe. In Chincha too they are all well, including Father Rubén, who was visiting them. There are at least 510 dead, 85,000 victims and almost 17,000 houses destroyed by the earthquake.

The localities affected are without water and light and aid is arriving slowly by air and sea, because of serious damage to the roads. There are 1500 injured. If there is any other news we will report it.

These days, my thoughts and my prayers centre on the Province of Peru and all the members of the Vincentian Family. The names of the places affected call up loving memories of the several visits I was privileged to make to Peru, – the last one being for the retreat to the confreres.
May Mongsignor Lisson plead incesantly for all the Daughters and Sons of St. Vincent who have been called deeper into the mystery of the Cross.
In the love of our Lord

I am delighted that we are receiving comments about the emergency in Peru.

Please note that we have also set up a special email address for this situation earthquake-peru@famvin.org.
Please write in whatever language you can (realizing that some may be able to read this note in English but not write in English.

I would welcome it if some readers would be willing to translate for those who read only English.

As we did in the Hurrican Katrina situation we will also develop pages in the Vincentian Encyclopedia.
