Pope Francis recently blessed thirteen keys imbued with profound symbolism. Each key represents a country where the Famvin Homeless Alliance is working to provide housing solutions for the homeless. This gesture echoes the mission of St. Vincent de Paul, who initiated a similar effort in 17th-century Paris.

A Legacy of Charity Across Centuries

The inspiration for this project dates back to 1643, when St. Vincent de Paul, moved by the plight of street children, sought to help them beyond simply providing food. Following the death of King Louis XIII, St. Vincent inherited a sum equivalent to one million euros today. With this money, he purchased thirteen houses in Paris to shelter these children, offering them education and vocational training to integrate into society.

The 13 Houses Campaign: Global Impact

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul’s work, the 13 Houses Campaign was launched in 2018. To date, this project has provided housing and assistance to over 10,000 people in 70 countries. During the Jubilee Year, the goal is to expand this impact by encouraging more communities and nations to join the effort.

Among the highlighted initiatives is Pope Francis’s direct sponsorship of housing for thirteen families in Syria. This act seeks to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis affecting millions in this country, where war and poverty continue to wreak havoc, even if they no longer dominate the news headlines.

A Symbol of Hope

The thirteen keys blessed by the Pope feature a special design. Each key’s neck depicts an image of a homeless person covered by a dove under a sheet, symbolizing the Holy Spirit protecting the most vulnerable. This design is an adaptation of a sculpture created by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz, blessed by Pope Francis in 2022, and now incorporated into the symbolism of this project.

A Call to Solidarity

The Famvin Homeless Alliance aims not only to provide shelter but also to restore dignity and hope to the most marginalized individuals. This project calls on the world to remember and act on forgotten humanitarian crises, such as Syria’s, promoting a global commitment to justice and solidarity.

Inspired by St. Vincent de Paul’s example, this effort demonstrates how a legacy of charity can transcend generations and become a beacon of hope for the homeless worldwide.
