Igniting Passion for Reading in Young Minds

by | Jul 6, 2024 | News

Reading books is becoming less popular as smartphones, social networking, and video games overwhelm the contemplative experience of reading. Reading opens up unlimited possibilities to the students with the skills they need for lifetime learning and success by instilling this habit in the children’s early stages.

It is said in the well-known proverb, “A book is a dream that you hold in your hands.” Keeping these thoughts in mind, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth at Nazareth School, Chandapura, Bangalore (India), are committed to fostering a reading culture. Before National Reading Day, Reading Week was organized June 12-18, 2024, to encourage regular reading and enhance student literacy.

Following the morning assembly, each student brought a storybook and set aside 15 minutes to read every day. This initiative aimed to instill a love for reading and promote literacy among students. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and curiosity as students immersed themselves in their chosen books, experiencing the joy and adventure that reading brings.

The speeches delivered on the benefits of reading books made at the assembly were both inspiring and encouraging. These inputs emphasized how reading not only increases information but also improves focus, critical thinking, and understanding. It will also help students to expand their views and gain a better grasp of the world around them by immersing themselves in other ideas and viewpoints.

The activity tremendously motivated children to embrace reading as an important part of their daily routine. Sisters intend to organize more such activities in the future to enhance our children’s interest in literacy.

A Journey of Awareness and Harmony

On June 21, 2024, International Yoga Day was celebrated at Nazareth School with great enthusiasm and dedication. Under the guidance of Mrs. Sasikala, our esteemed yoga instructor, and the collaborative efforts of our staff, a special session was organized on Yoga Day in which all students and teachers participated wholeheartedly.

The celebration commenced with a spectacular performance by our students, setting a vibrant and energetic tone for the day. They eagerly engaged in both sitting and standing asanas (postures), each representing a unique work of art. The students exuded grace and poise as they demonstrated various asanas. One notable posture, Shanti Asana (Peace Position), embodied self-discipline, concentration, and self-awareness.

The timeless practice of yoga deeply rooted in India’s rich history and philosophy, holds a special place in the hearts at Nazareth School. The sisters embrace yoga as a holistic approach to nurture the body, mind, and spirit of the students. As Swami Vivekananda, the revered Indian philosopher and religious teacher, profoundly stated: “Through practice comes yoga, through yoga comes knowledge, through knowledge comes love, and through love comes blessings.”

This celebration was a testament to the Sisters’ commitment to this transformative journey, fostering a sense of unity, peace, and well-being among the students.
