Sisters of Charity Halifax are set to Mark 175 years of service on May 11

The Sisters of Charity Halifax, tracing their origins back to four Sisters arriving in Halifax from New York in the mid-19th century, are preparing to celebrate 175 years of service on May 11. Since their inception, they have tirelessly served their community, initially focusing on education and care for orphans. Over the years, their mission expanded geographically, reaching regions such as Bermuda, Massachusetts, and even as far as Peru and the Dominican Republic. Despite evolving societal needs, the Sisters have remained steadfast in their commitment to education, social services, and healthcare. Although the congregation has experienced a decline in active members in recent years, with 177 currently engaged in ministry compared to a peak of over 1,600 in 1966, the spirit of compassionate service remains unwavering. Reflecting on their lifelong dedication, Sisters Martin and Kull express a deep sense of fulfillment and commitment to their vocation, noting a conscious decision made during a recent chapter meeting to continue their service until their last breath. A Liturgy of Thanksgiving will be held to commemorate the anniversary at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Halifax, symbolizing the enduring legacy of the Sisters’ selfless devotion.
