The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, along with friends and family, are eagerly preparing for a momentous occasion on March 7, 2024 – the 109th birthday of Sister Evelyn Hurley. This upcoming celebration, to be held at the Motherhouse on March 10, promises to be a joyous event, honoring the extraordinary life of one of the oldest living women religious in the United States.

Sister Evelyn, affectionately known as Sister Evie, is also looking forward to her 90th profession of vows to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Her commitment to her faith and community continues to inspire many, both within and outside of her religious family.

As Sister Evie approaches her 109th year, she reflects: “Each year brings more joy and love. I am blessed to be surrounded by such a caring community. The journey has been long, but every moment is a treasure.”

Born in 1915, Sister Evelyn entered the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth as a teenager. Her life has been a demonstration of service, having held various roles in the Congregation, especially in education. Sister Evelyn’s life has spanned significant historical events, technological advancements, and societal changes, yet her dedication to her vocation has remained strong.

Last year, Sister Barbara Flores, during the Eucharistic celebration for Sister Evelyn’s 108th birthday, remarked, “Sister Evelyn’s life is a beacon of faith and joy. Her presence among us is a gift that continues to enrich our lives.”

In honor of Sister Evelyn’s upcoming birthday, her family will embark on an unforgettable journey to Belize City, where they will be building a home in collaboration with the Sisters of Charity og Nazareth. From Feb. 18 through Feb. 26, they will join the SCN Lay Mission Volunteer Program to construct a home for a family in need. Immersed in the vibrant Belizean culture and forging deep connections with the locals during this home build, relatives will show their love and support to Sister Evie.

The upcoming celebration on March 10 will be further highlighted by the presence of Sister Evie’s family members, including her nephew Kevin Richards, his wife Donna, and niece Maureen Richards. Father Robert Casey of St. Brigid Parish in South Boston, where Sister Evie served for over five decades, is also expected to attend virtually. Last year, he brought citations from state and national leaders, including a declaration from City Council member Mike Flaherty, marking March 7 as Sister Evelyn Hurley Day in Boston.

Father Casey, reflecting on last year’s celebration, shared heartfelt messages and birthday cards from the community, including charming notes from first graders of South Boston Catholic Academy, showcasing the deep impact of Sister Evie’s legacy.

“109 is amazing! You taught my grandma. Happy Birthday!” – A first-grade student of South Boston Catholic Academy.

Father Casey highlighted Sister Evelyn’s remarkable memory and her enduring connection with her former students. Although retired, Sister Evie remains actively involved in the Community, offering support and prayers to those around her.

Last year, at the end of Mass, Sister Evie was presented with an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis. In his homily last year, Father Casey said, “Sister Evelyn, your life is a testament to faith and love. Your journey as a religious Sister continues to illuminate the paths of many.”

Sister Evie will be honored on Feb. 11 at St. Gregory Parish during a celebration organized by the Archdiocese of Louisville for all Jubilarians. These events are evidence of Sister Evie’s significant impact and the high esteem in which she is held by the community and the Church.
