Empowering women through skill training enhances their economic independence, fostering self-confidence and breaking societal barriers. Acquiring new skills equips women for diverse roles, promoting inclusivity and gender equality in various fields. New skills enhance women’s confidence and capabilities, enabling them to navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

Navjyoti Centre, Munal Path, which is situated in Dharan, is run by Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. It is a unit of Nepal Nazareth Society. On Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, 11 women started the one-week skill training program. Sister Latika Kottuppallil, Provincial of Patna Province, inaugurated the program. Under the guidance of Mrs. Rina Tamrakar and Sancha Maya Tamang, who are experts in tailoring and other skill training, the women are well-trained in making various types of bags. These young women are very much interested in mastering this skill since there is a demand in the market for bags, and it is a good source of livelihood for them.

The materials for the bags are bought by the women and by the time they complete the training, they are able to make 50 to 60 bags in a week. Once the women are capable of making it by themselves, they work from their own homes and sell the bags in the shops. Many women are able to generate income for their families and meet their financial needs through this skill training. Besides bag making, regular tailoring classes are also conducted, and 11 women and men are learning tailoring.

Since 2010, Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have been serving the people of Munal Path and working for the empowerment of the women in the area. At present, Aisha Kavalakattu, SCN, a dedicated social worker, takes care of the program. Ten female students from economically weaker sections from the interior areas of Sunsuri District are residing as boarders in Navjyoti Munal Path, and they are enrolled in our Navjyoti School, Dharan.

Through the Centre, Sister Aisha also monitors 31 Self Help Groups (SHGs) and two children’s clubs. Through the SHG, women are able to manage their houses and businesses, and they become financially independent. Through SHG, women are also able to take loans with low interest to meet various needs.

Navjyoti Centre also has a computer training program, and at present, 27 students (girls and boys) are attending this program.

Empowering women is not just a moral obligation. It is a strategic imperative for the progress of our society. When we empower women, we unlock a wealth of untapped potential, creativity and intelligence.
