An Undaunted Spirit
In the heart of Bihar’s ancient city, a beacon of hope shines brightly against societal challenges. A young woman, Verma (pseudonym used), is serving as an inspiration for countless others. A polio victim, Verma, 23, stands tall without external support, refusing to let her physical condition define her future.
The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, operating the Maria Health Center in Rajgir (India), have devoted their lives to uplifting the less privileged, focusing on empowering young girls from the Musahar community and other castes. Their mission with Chirag School is clear and motivating: to create self-aware, caring, and responsible lifelong learners.
Amidst this setting of hope and transformation, Verma is charting a remarkable path despite her physical and economic challenges.
In 2005, Sister Rose Plathottathil, in charge of Chetanalaya in Rajgir, took Verma under her wing. Her trust and support played a critical role in Verma’s journey to self-reliance. The resilient young woman completed high school in 2014 and pursued her higher secondary education at St. Joseph Secondary School in Barh.
Between 2016 and 2017, Verma started giving back to the community that had nurtured her, teaching at the Chirag Vidyalaya, run by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Encouraged by her teaching experience, she aspired to further her education, enrolling in Patna Women’s College for a B.Sc degree in 2018. Financial difficulties forced her to discontinue regular college, but Verma never let go of her dreams. She completed her B.Sc as a private student from Patliputra University in 2022.
Today, with her unwavering spirit, Verma teaches at her alma mater, Chirag Vidyalaya. She gives her students the gift of education and an example of tenacity and resilience.
