Spalding University Carries on Legacy of Namesake
Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, has long been committed to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equity in higher education. The following is an excerpt from the Louisville College Guide:
Founded by Mother Catherine Spalding and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Spalding University has provided access to learning through the practices of peace, justice and service since the early twentieth century. When the institution (then known as Nazareth College) opened its doors in 1920, it was the first Catholic four-year women’s college in Kentucky. When women and Catholics in the area faced harassment and religious sectarianism, the Sisters remained true to their purpose to “meet the needs of the times” despite objections and obstacles.
Mother Catherine’s vision for educating young women and the mission of the Sisters to adapt continued throughout the next century.
Many regard Catherine Spalding, the namesake of the university, as the first social worker in Kentucky. Her legacy is carried on through meaningful programs that advocate for social causes. The university’s portfolio reflects her passion, with over 30 degree programs that impact education, health and social services and give voice to underrepresented individuals and communities.
