The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s Lay Mission Volunteer Program and Office of Ecological Sustainability were invited to contribute to a virtual discussion on climate change, hosted as part of the ‘Ríos de Esperanza / Rivers of Hope’ Pilgrimage, sponsored jointly by the Asociación de Hermanas Latinas Misioneras en América (AHLMA), the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM), the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the Mexican American Catholic College (MACC), and the Religious Brothers Conference (RBC).

This pilgrimage features four virtual discussions, centered along U.S. rivers, reflecting upon pressing social and environmental justice issues. On January 11, AmeriCorps volunteer Julia Gerwe represented the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth as a guest panelist on the discussion surrounding climate change. In her presentation, Julia defined climate change, offered background on the impacts of climate change in Kentucky, and shared the SCNs’ work in responding to natural disasters intensified by climate change, including the recent tornadoes in Western Kentucky. Julia’s first-hand experience participating in the disaster relief trip to Campbellsville and Bowling Green, KY were well received.
