Will We Leave Ourselves Homeless?

by | Aug 15, 2019 | Formation, Reflections

What if we reflect upon homelessness as the loss of Earth and the many habitats and ecosystems that support human life? Greta Thunberg calls us to this parallel reflection in her emotional speech to EU leaders (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWsM9-_zrKo). Our house, planet Earth, is on fire! Greta asks us to panic and act accordingly without delay. This is a crisis. We must keep fossil fuels in the ground.

Greta inspired youth climate strikes on a global level beginning in 2018. Greta is taking a year off from school to focus on her campaign for our home, Earth. In her travels to events, she is careful of her carbon footprint and doesn’t fly. She will be coming to America in a racing yacht equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines that produce electricity onboard with the aim of making the journey zero-carbon. Greta speaks to world leaders, the United Nations, individual marches and a variety of other places urging action on behalf of our home, Earth.

Greta’s heart connection with the web of life on Earth gives us pause to reflect. The Season of Creation (September 1 – October 4) provides time for us to reflect upon the depth of our connection withthe web of life: biodiversity as God’s blessing. How is this depth demonstrated in my daily actions?

The next youth climate strike will be held during the week of September 20-27. These strikes are global and yet, local organizers plan them in solidarity with the movement. The September event promises to be even larger than the climate strikes prior as many businesses will close doors, scientists will join and march alongside students and faith leaders and institutions will stand with youth strikers to fight against fossil fuel projects and massive government inaction on the part of governments. More information on the day can be found at https://globalclimatestrike.net/. How is it that I / we plan to support our youth and prevent God’s creation from being homeless on a deeper level?
