Lay Missionary Life: Bits here and there
Life as a lay missionary – either domestic or international – requires commitments to ones own community, the community of mission and the broader world.
Each local community develops its own communal commitments, and develops its own plan for life — in prayer, in witness, in evangelization. They do stuff together, for lots of reasons. They learn to serve, to pray, to witness — to communicate the gospel in a variety of ways (and that’s evangelization!). They learn to love and to cherish one another and the communities in which they are embedded. Here’s a bit of the life of the Colorado Vincentian Volunteers.
For our last Community Action Day, the volunteers went with their house communities to EarthLinks and LARADON to help with a few projects. The two groups had a blast and appreciated being hosted by these two stellar organizations! Also, a special thanks to our friend Mat Elmore from Microgrid Energy for starting our day with an enLIGHTening lesson in all things solar energy!
“By and large a good rule for finding out (to what you are called) is this: the kind of work God usually calls you to is the kind of work (a) that you need most to do and (b) that the world most needs to have done. … The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet” (Buechner, F. Wishful Thinking: A Seeker’s ABC, 118-19).
Hear it? “… went with their house communities to help…(and)…had a blast”!
