Seton Hill University art and music students make a difference by bringing the power of the arts to underserved youth in Pittsburgh.

The Seton Arts Service Corps is a cooperative program of the Sisters of Charity and Seton Hill University to use the power of the arts to help transform the lives of underserved youth. Students use their art making skills to continue the traditions of service of the Sisters of Charity with youth in targeted areas.

The program provides the following benefits to students from the Visual and Performing Arts Division:

  • A broader understanding of the role of the arts in addressing community needs.
  • Service-learning opportunities in the arts.
  • An understanding of the risk factors at play in urban communities.
  • Experience teaching youth in the arts.

Chartered in 1918, Seton Hill University is a leading Catholic coeducational liberal arts university founded by the Sisters of Charity and embracing students of all faiths. Located in southwestern Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands (yet only 35 miles from Pittsburgh), Seton Hill educates its more than 2000 students to “think and act critically, creatively and ethically as productive members of society committed to transforming the world.”

In the summer of 1882, Mother Aloysia Lowe, Mother Superior of the Pennsylvania Sisters of Charity, purchased the land in Greensburg, Pa. where Seton Hill University’s main hilltop campus now stands. She named the site, which consisted primarily of farmland, Seton Hill, in honor of Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, the founder of the Sisters of Charity and the first American-born saint.
