November 11, 2015, marked the first fish harvest of the VFHI’s Tilapia Farm in Savane Perdue. The tilapia farm came as a result of 2 years of analysis, construction, and preparation.

The fish farm is the first of many projects in the area with the goal of creating economic activity. The tilapia were sold by women trained through a resellers program. These same women have initial training from “Chemen Lavi Miyò” or “Pathway to a Better Life” a program run by our partner Fonkoze and sponsored by VFHI. It is an 18 month program putting mothers through an intensive formation process with the goal of self-sufficiency.

The preparation for the harvest started at 4:00 am, by 6:00 am, the women were lined up to sign a re-sellers contract and collect their coolers and ice before getting a stock of fish. The fish are from the first stock of 10,000, the farm will grow to over 100,000 in the months and to come.
