groundbreaking-sept27-1961“We Saw The First Spade of Earth Turned” – virtual tour of historic St. Joseph’s Provincial House. (Locals dubbed the large,  new building “the Seton Hilton.”

The Daughters of Charity Provincial Archives offer a virtuals tour with elected images from our our current exhibit, on display in Gallery.

See also a video featuring memories of three Sisters who were there when they moved into the building in 1964.

Viewing the “the virtual exhibit” may move some to make a pilgrimage there.

  • Many sisters carried desks and chairs from the Central  House but were sent back.  Project Manager Sr.  Margaret Hickey (known  among the contractors as
    “The Drill Sergeant”)  insisted the Provincial  House furnishings be “modern.”
  • The original crucifix above the chapel altar had a double corpus.
  • The 69 postulants were amazed by the building’s size – and the amount of red mud!
  • Early architectural  renderings show another  wing was planned.
