Antipoverty Programs and Immigration Reform

Take Action! Urge Your Representatives To Protect Antipoverty Programs and Pass Immigration Reform

Dear Vincentians,

Two weeks ago, Catholic leaders, including representatives of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, gathered in Washington, D.C., to urge members of Congress to protect human life and dignity. The issues we raised with lawmakers include protecting poverty-focused funding to help the poorest and most vulnerable people in communities across the country. At the same time, we encouraged their support for comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in our country, a focus on reuniting families, improved temporary worker programs, and addressing the root causes of why people are compelled to leave their home countries.

You can help amplify these messages by contacting your members of Congress now and re-emphasizing the Church’s message that Congress has a responsibility to reduce our nation’s deficits, but do so in ways that ensure help for people living in poverty, and to fix our ineffective immigration system.

Contact your members of Congress today and let them know that you support the Church’s message to protect human life and dignity. Please be sure to personalize your message with any anecdote regarding the people you see in your work who would be affected by these budget cuts. (As always, the dignity and confidentiality of those we serve are paramount, so please do not use actual names.) Just click on the “Take Action” link in the upper right corner of your screen.

Sheila GIlbertThank you for the work you do for those in need.

Yours in St. Vincent and Blessed Frédéric,

Sheila K. Gilbert
