Depaul UK – moving from homelessness

Depaul UK in the North East is delighted to have been awarded £38,000 for a new service which will enable it to help young homeless people move out of homelessness accommodation and into private tenancies. The funding is has been awarded to three projects in the North East.

It comes from the Private Rented Sector (PRS) Access Development Programme, administered by Crisis and funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).  The PRS Access Schemes specialise in breaking down the barriers single homeless people face when getting into and keeping hold of a decent rented home. Nationally, the scheme has helped 4,000 homeless people into decent homes since 2010.

Depaul UK’s PRS  scheme will recruit and support landlords and offer assistance and advice, such as on finding suitable accommodation, paying a deposit and rent in advance and help with money management, to young people who are looking to move on from homelessness and ready to live independently.

Steve McKinlay, Manager of Depaul UK in the North East said: “Young people who are living in homelessness accommodation often struggle to find a home and have often not been a priority for assistance through other schemes and programmes. Being able to access tenancies in the private sector will really help the young people we work with on their pathway out of homelessness accommodation.  We are pleased to receive this new funding from Crisis and are excited to be working alongside North Tyneside Council.”
