FAMVIN goes mobile! (And why)

The English language portion of famvin has just converted to a mobile device format …phones, tablets, etc. (Don’t worry… it still works quite well on a desk top!) Since by the end of 2013  there will be more smartphones surfing the web than there will be PCs and laptops it is necessary for websites to be mobile-friendly.

Approximately three quarters of the world’s population now has access to a mobile phone, according to a new study from the World Bank. Today there are six billion subscriptions active today. Last year alone, mobile users downloaded more than 30 billion apps.

Additionally, the vast majority of today’s mobile subscriptions (5 billion) are in developing countries, a sign of mobile technology’s importance in countries which haven’t gone through the expensive and difficult process of building land-based communications infrastructure.

In case you did not know, half of Africa’s one billion population has a mobile phone – and not just for talking. The power of telephony is forging a new enterprise culture, from banking to agriculture to healthcare.

Nearly half of India’s 1.2 billion people have no toilet at home, but more people own a mobile phone, according to the latest census data.

So if we want to be accessible we needed to adapt. For starters there is less real estate to use.

We do not claim to have everything right but we are starting. We would appreciate your feedback to help us get it right.

Remember that 2013 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederic who said he longed to circle the world in a band of charity.
