“A coalition of welfare and community groups, including the St Vincent de Paul Society, has called on the Federal Government to commit to a $2.5 billion stimulus package for the housing sector in the next Budget. Australians for Affordable HousĀ­ing (AAH), of which the Society is a member organisation, has asked for an increase in rent assistance of up to $25 a week to help alleviate some of the housing stress in the rental market” reports the Vincentian website in Australia.

Dr John Falzon, the Societyā€™s national council chief executive officer, said Australia cannot claim to be ā€œthe land of the fair goā€ as long as it persists in ā€œdenying so many of our people the right to housingā€. ā€œOver 240,000 households are waiting for public and community housing.
