“Today the St Vincent de Paul Society National Council would like to thank its Australian volunteers, who number in excess of 50,000, and pay tribute to the selfless efforts of volunteers worldwide.

National President Anthony Thornton said International Volunteers Day (December 5) was a great opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who gives of their time and energy to help other people.

“As a volunteer-based organisation it is important for us to remember that volunteers, as a whole, have no one defining feature, other than the fact they like to help out. Volunteering is not a practice shrouded in mystery. It is practical and rewarding and anyone can do it.

“Our volunteers vary from primary school aged children, who join their local Mini Vinnies group to those who run Vinnies Centres and retirees who are dedicated to running their local St Vincent de Paul Society conference, visiting people who are excluded and disadvantaged, ” Mr Thornton said.

“As Christmas approaches, I want to say a special thank you to all of our volunteers who are doing all they can to bring both material assistance and companionship to people who are doing it tough.”

Reflections:

  • Do we thank or take for granted those who work along side use in our service?
  • What is the best way to say thank you?
