The Vincentian Encyclopedia has posted a brief history of Affiliates of the Daughters of Charity.  “Interestingly, the Daughters were formed as Affiliates of the Ladies of Charity; i.e., the laity was in charge and the Daughters assisted them.”

What an interesting trajectory — from a bounded conception of religious life, to an inclusive/open one, and back again. I wonder what’s next?

Ok. now I really want to cry. know this: in 1972 when I was in the Community of the Daughters of Charity, and I wanted to simply be an ‘Affliate’–no one told me that in ’69 there was talk of it. I thought I made up the concept. I wrote up a proposal. ( I still have a copy of the ‘purple paper’ write up.) I asked. I was told: ‘there are many options for you, Alma, on the outside. there are not those options in here.’ So, I left.

Wow. Now I learn. i could have been.
    No one told me.

Maybe they just wanted me gone…that’s possible, too. gh
