Why we need saints

Georgia wrote “We need heroes. We need to give kids heroes. Without heroes, they will give us gangs.” And worse. Some food for thought. We have a history full of heroes – Vincentian and others. Do we tell the stories of the Saints and saints often enough?

Remember ‘holy cards’? As a kid we’d get them as rewards in Catholic School. True, some of the faces looked like they had serious goiter diseases or were sick their stomach, but others, and there were others, who gave us direction in life.

No holy cards seem to be around these days, so call them ‘bookmarks’ if you will. Put, our Lady of Guadalupe on them. Put Juan Diego on them. Say a fact like: Juan Diego walked 15 miles each day to go to Mass. Nothing more. Just enough to think about.

We need to see the faces of Saints of today. The list is long. Lord know Pope John Paul II canonized enough of them to start a small country with. Go to the vatican website. Find the list. Find someone. Make a bookmark of that face, and put a fact on back.
Run off on your computer 4 or more of these bookmarks. Go to the public library. Put a bookmark in a good book. Leave it there. It is a beginning. gh
