“Education is about molding better people and contributing to building a better world,” says Philippine Vice President and Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council Chairman Noli “Kabayan” De Castro. De Castro welcomed the launch of the Vincentian Center for Social Responsibility (VCSR) at Adamson University.

The Vice President said that the VCSR is proof that Adamson and the Vincentian community realize that the purpose of an educational institution is not just to train future professionals nor just teach specific knowledge and skills ultimately.

Conceptualized and put into life by the Adamson University and its integrated community extension services, the VCSR intends to engage the Adamson’s academic community more deeply and directly in nation-building.

Speaking during the launching of the VSCR at the Adamson University Theater last week, De Castro said the center is a “great idea whose time has come.”

He added “it is high time we introduce to students a concept of brotherhood that is not based on exclusivity. It is high time that we include action and community involvement in the concept of higher learning.”

The Vice President also cited the Adamson University and the Vincentian community for their efforts in putting up the VCSR which, he said, is proof that the school and the people behind it realize that the purpose of an educational institution is not just to train future professionals nor just teach specific knowledge and skills ultimately.

“Education is about molding better people and contributing to building a better world,” he said.

De Castro lauded the fact that VCSR has chosen an advocacy that is related to housing and urban development.

“At mas natutuwa ako na ang napili ninyong pilot community ay ang Southville relocation site sa Cabuyao,” he said.

He added the government is exerting all its efforts to lessen the difficulties experienced by the relocatees.

Due to the limited funds of the government, he said it needs all the support it can get from peoples’ groups, non-government organizations and other well-meaning organizations such as the VCSR.
