The number of cases of the most serious type of malaria around the world has increased to an estimated 515 million, according to a study in the journal Nature, making the disease possibly more deadly than AIDS. The study, which counted nearly twice the number of cases than the number estimated by the World Health Organization, said most of the cases are located in sub-Saharan Africa and nearly a quarter of the total are in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific.  Guardian (London), The (3/10), Times (London), The (3/10), BBC (3/10), AlertNet.org/Reuters (3/9)
The world’s most neglected crises
A Reuters AlertNet survey of humanitarian and relief experts found the Democratic Republic of Congo represents the most overlooked and neglected crisis in the world today, with northern Uganda, western and southern Sudan, West Africa, Colombia, Chechnya, Nepal and Haiti also being named to the list. The poll found the world’s most “forgotten” crises lacked attention for a variety of reasons, but many of those who participated in the AlertNet poll questioned the performance of the media in covering such stories.  AlertNet.org/Reuters (3/9), AlertNet.org (3/10)
