poorest 57%.The following information is from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

• In sub-Saharan Africa, more people live in poverty than the entire population of the United States.

• In 2002, Zambia spent 25% of its revenue on debt servicing, Malawi spent 15%.

• 113 million school-age children are not in school – 97% of them in developing
countries.

• 60% of children not in primary school worldwide are girls.

• Poverty reduction requires a three-pronged strategy of
– supporting meaningful work,
– strengthening marriage and family life,
– and sustaining the needy and vulnerable among us, especially our children.
